Bank House’s History

The Bank House Dental Centre building has an interesting history and has seen many changes in its time. In researching the history of Princes Risborough and the building we were able to go back as far as it being a school for boys in 1830 where we found the following advertisement from the Bucks Gazette and general Advertiser dated Saturday 9th January 1830:
“John Young Stratton informs his friends, and the public in general, that his PREPARATORY SCHOOL for YOUNG GENTLEMEN under Twelve Years of Age, will re-open after the present recess, on MONDAY, 18th JANUARY. Terms – Board and Education in Latin, English, Writing and Accounts, £20 per Annum, washing not included.  Payments to be made half – yearly; and a quarters notice or pay previous to removal.”

There were also many letters discovered from literature found by Buckinghamshire Archaeological society which were written between a 9 year old pupil of the school and his mother and father which continue until he leaves the school at 12 years of age. The letters speak of many happenings in the school; including the illness and deaths of many students from meningitis and tuberculosis, to the two annual fairs on 6th May for cattle and 21st October for pleasure.

The building remained a school for up to 30 years, but by sometime before 1861 it was definitely closed and inhabited by a Mr J Busby who was a painter and tobacconist. In 1868 Mr Busby was awoken at midnight to an alarm of fire which tore through the building damaging his workshop, out houses and the two adjacent buildings. Two fire engines had been sent for but by the time they arrived at 3 o clock in the morning the fire had been extinguished by people from the village. Even the women assisted, climbing ladders and hauling buckets as well as they could. Some said that Mr Busby himself started the fire, although this was never confirmed. The building was then re-built, this time to the height of the adjacent buildings making it bigger than before.

It is hard to find any information on the building for the following 30 years but we believe it has been a dental practice for the last 100 years!

We have of course evolved greatly in that time and we are now a modern, friendly and caring practice. Dr Sanjay Narda has just recently celebrated his 10 years at Bank House and offers implant dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and adult orthodontics (including the Inman Aligner, 6 Month Smiles and invisible braces) as well as general dentistry.

Restoring Chipped and Broken Teeth

From minor chips to major damage, broken teeth should not be ignored.

Whilst breaking a tooth can feel quite dramatic at the time, unless pain is felt afterwards, it can be tempting to leave it just as it is, especially if it is not a visible tooth.

Minor chips to a tooth are even more likely to result in this approach, but our dentist based near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, highly recommends that this is a problem that should not be ignored.

Abrasions

One of the most immediate effects that might be felt following a broken tooth, and presuming that there is no immediate pain, is that of a sharp edge which can cut or graze the inside of the cheek, lips or tongue.

This can be uncomfortable and is likely to be noticeable on an almost daily basis. If ignored, there is also a possibility of infection occurring in these areas.

The Ageing Effects of Missing Teeth

Restoring lost teeth with dental implants.

Many of our patients who visit us from Chinnor and Thame as well as Princes Risborough, where we are situated, mention that they have noticed an ageing effect following the loss of some of their teeth.

Even if the missing tooth is not an obviously visible one, it can still have a surprising effect on the appearance of the person who has lost them.

Bone loss

When a tooth is lost, whether through decay or an accident, it is not only the tooth itself which is lost, but the bone in which the tooth was previously held.

Even with a single tooth, this can make a difference to the person’s appearance, but when a number of teeth are missing, this change becomes even more pronounced.

Following the loss of teeth, the bone in the jaw, which has previously had the role of supporting the teeth, “realises” that it no longer has to fulfill this purpose, and, consequently starts to deteriorate.

This bone however, not only supports teeth but also other facial features such as lips and cheeks. Very often a person with missing teeth will have sunken cheeks which make them appear to be older than they possibly are.

This “ageing” look can be prevented however, through the use of dental implants.

Improving Your Smile With Modern Orthodontics

Creating an even, attractive smile in just six months.

Dental braces have been around for a very long time. Most though, are not only highly visible and therefore unsightly, but also can take a significant amount of time to work fully; in some cases, two years or more.

Both of these factors may act to deter many potential patients from Princes Risborough, and surrounding towns such as High Wycombe and Thame, from having their teeth straightened, leaving them instead with crooked and uneven teeth. Not only does this create an unattractive smile but can also lead to potential damage to the teeth caused by an incorrect bite.

Modern orthodontics

The good news is that there are now many braces available for adults which are designed to be discreet. These are usually made from tooth coloured materials which are finer and consequently much less visible.

Some of these orthodontics though still take quite a long period of time to work. This is logical, in many ways, as too much pressure applied to the teeth could cause damage.

Some orthodontics though, such as ‘Six Month Smiles’, enable a shorter treatment time by acting only on the visible front teeth and not the harder to reposition rear ones.

Dental Veneers – The Next Step to Whiter Teeth

How veneers are used for badly stained teeth to create a better smile.

Have you ever noticed that your teeth are not as white as they used to be?

This is probably to be expected as many years of eating and drinking teeth staining foods and drinks is likely to have had an impact on the colour of your teeth as you age progressively.

Even with a ‘pure’ diet though that contained no staining foods, most people would notice a level of discolouration simply caused by the passing of the years. Much of this discolouration occurs in the  interior of the teeth rather than on the surface enamel.

Because of this, brushing alone will have little or no effect on the colour of your teeth.

Teeth whitening

At the Bank House Dental Centre, we are able to offer an effective teeth whitening procedure to our patients from local villages such as Chinnor in and around Princes Risborough. In most cases, this procedure alone will be sufficient, and will elevate the level of the whiteness of the teeth several degrees, leaving the patient satisfied with their new whiter teeth.

Occasionally though, the whitening procedure may not fully have the effect that is desired. This usually occurs in situations where the teeth are very heavily stained.

This staining can occur when a patient has been a heavy smoker perhaps, or has drunk red wine for a number of years. Other common drinks such as tea and coffee also have a staining effect and a combination of all of these is likely to lead to heavy discolouration.

Children’s Dentistry in Aylesbury

Why 50% of children should NOT have dental decay.

A news item today caught our eye. In it, it stated that whilst children’s oral health was improving, rates of dental decay in 12 year olds still topped 50%.

Even in different children’s age groups, and in different parts of the country, rates still topped well over 30%. This, apparently, is an improvement on previous figures!

Whilst we welcome any improvement in children’s oral health, there really is no reason why rates should be so high.

At the Bank House Dental Centre, based near the town of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, we pride ourselves on dental care for all ages, from the very youngest to the oldest. With modern knowledge and oral health care, these rates of decay simply should not happen.

Cosmetic Dental Care For All

Accessing modern dentistry in smaller towns in Buckinghamshire.

Cosmetic dentistry is now, no longer restricted to just the rich and famous. The smiles that we see everyday on film stars and other celebrities, are now available to the rest of us too.

This is excellent news if you live in a large city, but what about those who are not so conveniently  situated; where do they go?

The likelihood is that smaller dental practices in these towns will only provide a limited range of cosmetic dental procedures, if any at all. This means then, that patients may need to travel instead.

Wendover

Let’s take someone looking for a cosmetic dentist in Wendover, for example. Wendover is a small town based at the bottom of the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire.

Within its population of around eight thousand will, inevitably include some who are interested in having dental implants or teeth whitening for example, in order to improve the aesthetic aspect  of their teeth.

Because of the size of Wendover, many potential patients will, almost certainly,  look outside of their own town to widen their choice.

At the Bank House Dental Centre, we are conveniently situated for these patients. In addition to dental implants, we also offer a wide range of other procedures which may be of interest.

These include the Six Month Smile, a fast acting orthodontic system, root canal treatment and, of course, the ever popular tooth whitening procedure.

By offering a wide range of cosmetic dental procedures, patients looking for dental implants in Wendover may also be delighted to discover that we can offer many more procedures that will be beneficial to them.

More than just convenient

Emergency Dental Care – High Wycombe and Aylesbury

Urgent dental care available at the Bank House Dental Centre.

On a daily basis, most of us perhaps think little about our teeth other than to brush and hopefully floss them twice a day.

When dental pain strikes though, it is all that we can think about and it seems to almost totally consume our thoughts.

Whilst most dental problems can be avoided through good care and regular check ups at our dentist near High Wycombe, even the best cared for teeth can suffer unexpected damage that needs urgent dental attention.

What to do

As soon as your dental emergency arises, the first thing that you should do is to reach for your phone and call the Bank House Dental Centre on 01844 343381 straight away.  The sooner that you can call us during the day, the more likely we are to be able to fit you in for treatment the same day.

Please don’t put off the phone call, hoping that the pain will go away, it very rarely does. Even non painful breakages should also be dealt with as soon as possible as, broken teeth will be weaker and may break further, making treatment more complicated than it otherwise may have been.

Having a Root Canal Procedure

Dispelling the myths surrounding this tooth saving dental treatment.

The two words which we use at the Bank House Dental Centre which are almost guaranteed to bring a look of concern to a patients face are ‘root and canal’. It seems that the myth of this procedure has become ingrained in the public consciousness.

Our dental patients from Chinnor, Thame and surrounding areas then, are usually relieved when we explain what the procedure actually entails and how it is not going to cause the pain that they expect.

When is root canal work needed?

A root canal procedure is usually used when the soft inner pulp of a tooth, where the nerves and some tiny blood vessels are stored, becomes infected. This can, as you might imagine, be very painful indeed.

One option, when this occurs is to extract the tooth and possibly replace it with a dental implant; however, in many cases, a root canal procedure can help to keep your natural tooth intact.

Your Child’s Oral Health

Taking care of children’s teeth from an early age.

Most parents want what is best for their children. From bringing them up correctly to seeing them through the school and difficult teenager years into adulthood, we do our very best to give them a good start in life.

It is sometimes surprising then, that some parents neglect to give sufficient thought to their dental care, at least until the first toothache strikes. Recent news reports have stated that one in eight young children suffer from tooth decay due to a high sugar diet.

Starting Early

Like many other dentists, the Bank House Dental Centre in Buckinghamshire, started life as a family dental practice and this is something that we are proud to continue to this day. Indeed, because of the importance that we place on getting children off to a good start with their oral health care, there are no charges for children under four years of age.
