Am I too old for cosmetic dentistry?
Many people believe that they are too old to have cosmetic dentistry or think that it is something only ‘young people’ do but that is not the case.
You are never too old to be happy with the way your teeth look and it is becoming much more common for people of any age to have cosmetic dental work.
How can I improve my smile?
Tooth whitening: tooth whitening is a very simple and safe procedure and it is the fastest and easiest way to improve the look of the teeth. As long as your teeth are healthy you will be suitable for treatment and in just two appointments you will be able to start your whitening.
Teeth Straightening: if you are unhappy with the position of your teeth it has never been easier to fix this problem. We offer many different types of orthodontics from removable appliances to fixed braces and we can straighten teeth in as little as 12 weeks.
Implants: if you are unhappy with missing teeth, have a denture that you find uncomfortable or have a tooth that needs extracting but you are worried about having a gap, then implants will change your life. The implant placement procedure is much easier and much less painful than having a tooth out. A couple of months later you the permanent crown can be fitted. People are always surprised at how simple it is!
If you have any questions about any of the above procedures then you may come for a free dental consultation to discuss these with the our implant and cosmetic dentist, Dr. Sanjay Narda. We see patients from Princes Risborough, Thame, Aylesbury, High Wycombe, Wendover and the surrounding areas.

A dental plan is a monthly payment plan to cover the cost of dental treatment and is a popular choice for many of our patients. Denplan is the best known dental plan and we are proud to be the only Denplan practice in Princes Risborough to be fully accredited.
There are different plans to choose from, depending on which feels right for you. Some cover all your check ups and hygiene appointments, and give discounts on treatments. More comprehensive plans cover check-ups, hygiene appointments and the vast majority of treatments for a fixed monthly fee.
Once you have decided you would like to go onto a plan, you first need to have your regular check-up and complete any necessary treatment which is outstanding. The dentist will then put you into a category which will determine your monthly amount. All future appointments will then be under the new plan.
A dental plan is a good way of helping you stay on track with your regular dental appointments, keep your mouth healthy and help you pay for any treatment you may need along the way.
If you are interested in going onto a plan then give us a call on 01844 343381 and we can book you your check-up appointment or visit our dental practice in Princes Risborough. We see patients from Princes Risborough, Thame, Aylesbury, Wendover, High Wycombe and the surrounding areas.
Most of us encounter stress at some point in our lives and for some people it’s a daily occurrence. Whether it’s due to a stressful job, raising young children, financial difficulties or dealing with illnesses in the family it can have a real impact on our oral health.
Studies have shown direct links between stress and the development of dental problems. So, what are the main causes of damage?
Bruxism: Otherwise known as grinding, this is one of the biggest causes of tooth damage. Grinding in the day is bad enough, but at night we can grind up to 20 times harder causing teeth to break and wear. One of the tell-tale signs is a sore jaw in the morning. If you think you are grinding your teeth it is important to get a night guard made.
Gum disease: Studies have shown that prolonged stress can affect our immune systems which increases how susceptible we are to infections including gum disease. The bacteria in our mouths can cause inflammation and infection of the gums, resulting in bleeding and eventually bone loss. Visiting the hygienist regularly will ensure you stay on top of the gum condition and in turn will help you keep your teeth for longer.
Ulcers: Ulcers do not affect the teeth directly but are a very unpleasant and painful side effect of stress. When our immune system is low, we are more likely to get ulcers. If an ulcer on the gum or inside of the lip is very painful it can lead to us avoiding the whole area, meaning that it doesn’t get brushed properly for a few days. If plaque is left on the tooth it can begin to damage the teeth and gums.
If you are feeling stressed, don’t neglect your teeth and gums and especially don’t use smoking or alcohol as a stress reliever! They also have negative impacts on the teeth and oral health in general and can become difficult habits to stop.
If you are concerned that stress might be affecting your teeth or gums it is important that you book an appointment to see a dentist. Toothache can be felt in many different ways. It can be a constant throbbing ache, or a mild pain that comes and goes – sometimes made worse by eating or drinking. When the pain is severe, it is impossible to ignore and a trip to the dentist is the biggest priority. If the pain is bearable it is easy to put off for a while hoping that it won’t get worse or will go away.
The key thing to remember with toothache is that it is your body’s way of letting you know that something isn’t right and usually the longer you leave it the worse it will get. If it gets bad enough that it is a constant throbbing pain, then usually the only treatment possible is root canal treatment or an extraction.
It is always a good idea to contact the dentist and book an appointment as soon as you notice a toothache so we can discover the cause of the problem. If the cause is identified early enough, it is possible that on simple treatment will be needed – which also keeps the cost down!
While you are waiting for your appointment, painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen may be necessary to help relieve the discomfort. Some pharmacies offer numbing gels which can help relieve some pain by slightly numbing the area.
If you are suffering from toothache or have been noticing a pain that comes and goes, contact us to book an appointment on 01844 343381 or visit our dental practice in Princes Risborough and we will try to see you the same day. We all know that sugar is bad for our teeth but what does it actually do to them?
It’s not the sugar itself that does the damage, but the sequence of events that happens after consuming it. The bacteria on our teeth (in plaque) feed on the sugars, producing acid as a result. The acids destroy the tooth enamel which is the first stage of decay. It’s not just the amount of sugar we eat, but also the frequency of eating it that is causing the damage. Here are a few ways to help us cut down on the amount of sugar that we are consuming:
- Be aware of ‘hidden’ sugars. Sugar has many names including sucrose, glucose, fructose, maltose, molasses, hydrolysed starch and corn syrup. Recognising these names helps us to avoid them.
- Opt for sugar free snacks. Snacking is one of the main culprits of acid attacks – it’s all too easy to reach for the biscuit tin! Find some healthier sugar free snacks, e.g. a handful of nuts, cheese, cucumber or raw carrot sticks with hummus, and restrict sugary snacks to meal times.
- Give up sugar in tea and coffee. Many people drink cups of tea or coffee throughout the day and if they take sugar this can quickly add up! Reducing or completely cutting out the sugar will really give your teeth a break.
- Drink water. Drinking water is very important to hydrate and wash away food debris, but it also keeps your saliva levels high to help neutralise sugars effectively.
- Eat the right breakfast. Breakfast cereals and smoothies are often very high in sugar. Swapping high sugar cereals to to low sugar cereals and muesli, or other low sugar options like wholegrain toast and eggs will have a massive impact on your oral health.
Making sure you visit the dentist regularly is very important to help spot any early signs of decay. Book an appointment with the Bank House Dental Centre in Princes Risborough so we can help you look after your teeth.
Gum disease isn’t just detrimental to the condition of the mouth but can also be detrimental to the rest of the body. Studies have shown that while it doesn’t cause these conditions, it can have harmful effects on people already suffering from heart disease, stroke, diabetes and dementia.
How can gum disease affect these things and how are they related?
Many years of studies have shown that the same bacteria responsible for the inflammation of the gums can get into the blood stream and over long periods of time it slowly damages the blood vessels in the heart and brain.
The good news is that you can prevent and treat gum disease by regular brushing and thorough oral health care, along with regular visits to the dentist. This has been shown to improve your overall health and reduce the risk of such problems.
The best home routine to have is to brush twice a day with an electric toothbrush for two minutes each time (using a fluoride toothpaste). It is also important to clean between the teeth once a day with interdental brushes or floss. Visiting the dentist regularly is very important to check for gum disease and to monitor existing gum disease.

How a missing tooth can affect your mouth.
Many people believe that losing one tooth will not be noticeable and it is only losing many that can cause a real change in the mouth but this is not true. If the tooth is at the back, you may not notice the difference visually, but functionally there is a big difference. If the loss of this tooth is not addressed, the surrounding teeth will be affected as they are taking more pressure and are more likely to break. Secondly, there is a risk the teeth will start to drift across or tip into the space, creating uneven spacing which can have negative effects on your bite.
If the tooth is at the front of the mouth it can look quite unsightly when you talk or smile and will also affect how you bite into foods. Also, the space can affect the way that you pronounce words and even cause you to have a lisp.
There is more than one way to replace a missing tooth. The most popular and natural looking way is a dental implant as this is the most comfortable option and has no negative effects on the other teeth. Other options include bridges fixed onto the adjacent teeth and dentures.
If you have a space left by a missing tooth or if you have lost multiple teeth and are looking to replace them then come and see us for a free implant consultation. We see many patients from Princes Risborough and the surrounding areas including Aylesbury, High Wycombe, Thame and Wendover and love to help them improve their smiles. Invisalign is an effective and comfortable way to straighten your teeth using almost invisible aligners and revolutionary technology. The aligners are made of a smooth, clear plastic and are one of the most discreet forms of orthodontic treatment enabling you to feel confident during the whole process.
The Invisalign process begins with a free assessment, where we evaluate your suitability using the unique Invisalign assessment tool. Following acceptance, the second appointment will involve impressions and measurements to ensure suitability for treatment. A ‘Clincheck’ will be sent to us for your third appointment which allows us to agree on a final outcome and show you your finished result using the latest 3D technology. The last appointment will be to fit your first aligners and to ensure you are confident in how to remove and insert them and know when to change to the next aligner.
Over the next few months, you will attend an appointment once every two weeks so we can monitor your progress and ensure your treatment is on track. Most of our Invisalign treatments take around 14 weeks so you will have straight teeth and be braces-free in as little as 3-4 months!
