Sensitive Teeth

Many people suffer from sensitive teeth. Sensitivity can start at any time, most commonly in people aged 25 and over, although it can affect people at any age.

Having sensitive teeth can mean anything ranging from the occasional mild twinge to severe discomfort lasting several hours. The teeth are most likely to feel sensitive when eating or drinking something cold, or when cold air hits your teeth.

Sensitive teeth can be caused by many different things including the following:

  • Decay: The bacteria in plaque can produce acid which attacks teeth and can cause cavities. As the cavities get bigger the can cause sensitivity and if left untreated, the tooth can become very painful and develop an abscess.

  • Gum recession: Gums may naturally recede (shrink back), and the roots will become exposed. As the root surfaces do not have an enamel layer to protect them, this can make them prone to sensitivity.

  • Gum disease: A build-up of plaque or tartar can irritate the gum and force the gum to recede down the tooth, even destroying the bony support of the tooth. Pockets can form in the gums around the tooth, making the area difficult to keep clean and the problem worse.

  • Tooth wear: This is loss of tooth enamel. It can be caused by either acid from acidic food and drinks or by abrasion, for example by brushing with excessive pressure. If enamel is worn away the underlying dentine is exposed, which may lead to sensitivity.

  • Cracked tooth: A crack in a tooth can cause it to become sensitive and also usually painful when biting down or into food.

If you develop sensitivity in one or more teeth, visit our dental centre in Princes Risborough so that we can determine the cause, and improve or get rid of the symptoms.

The majority of people these days have one or more fillings and for a long time silver amalgam fillings have been the most common option. However over the last decade, new materials have been developed with the strength of silver but the cosmetic appeal of a natural look.

The development of composite resins to be used in white fillings has improved to allow almost the strength and endurance of silver fillings while maintaining a natural colour. This is because the colour of the composite material can be matched with your natural colour to flawlessly blend into your teeth.

Why not come in for a consultation where the dentist will be able to advise you on how to improve your smile, and provide you with the best treatment plan for your individual needs.

Carrying out life-changing dental treatments, such as replacing dentures with implants so a patient is not restricted in what they can eat or straightening very crooked teeth that have stopped someone from smiling properly for years, is  hugely satisifying. We pride ourselves in being one of Buckinghamshire’s leading dental practices for such treatments but that does not mean we are not interested in doing the routine things like fillings and cleaning. The care we take in treating our patient’s shows in the generations of the same families that have been coming here for many years. Parents, that in some cases came here themselves as children are happy in the knowledge that their children are going to be well cared for.

Making sure we look after the little things helps ensure our patients can keep their teeth for as long as possible and avoid the dreaded D-word – dentures!

Many people thank that having dental implants is going to be too expensive as they are so high tech. This, however, is not the case at our dental centre. We have been placing implants for over a decade and as we buy our implants in bulk, we are able to pass on significant savings to our patients. In fact, the cost of dental implant treatment at our practice is not that different to what you would pay for a conventional bridge elsewhere. When you then consider that bridges usually last for between 7-15 years and involve the drilling down of teeth whereas implants usually last for a lifetime and do not require drilling of teeth, implants are far more cost-effective and less destructive than bridges.

Implant treament is available at Bank House Dental Centre from £750.

Children’s dentistry in Princes Risborough

Taking good care of your children’s teeth from an early age is vital if you want to make sure they don’t end up with toothache. Just because they will lose their milk teeth and grow adult ones, doesn’t mean they don’t need to be taught oral care.

From the moment they start to appear, your children’s teeth are just as susceptible to decay and other problems as your own teeth are.

For babies the key steps to avoiding problems in the future are to offer only milk and water when using a bottle, never juice or squash, and to start cleaning your child’s teeth twice a day as soon as they start to come through.

Initially, you should use a child’s toothbrush with a small amount of children’s toothpaste. It is easier to stand or sit behind your child so that you can clean their teeth more effectively. Brush gently in small circular movements and remember to brush along the gumline as well as the teeth. Even when your child can clean their own teeth, you should continue to supervise them.

Seeing a dentist regularly is important for your child. You should start to bring your child with you to appointments even before their own teeth appear, so they can get used to the sights, smells and sounds of the practice. These will be fairly informal, but enable us to keep a close eye on how your child’s teeth are developing. We offer free examinations on all children under 5 years if a parent is registered with us.

Last but certainly not least, discouraging your child from eating sugary snacks and drinking sweet and/or fizzy drinks in between meals will help keep the teeth healthier. Frequent consumption of these is the main cause of tooth decay and acid erosion.
