Why should I visit my dentist every 6 months?

- They check for plaque and tartar. Even if you feel you are very thorough with your tooth brushing, plaque is forming in the mouth all the time and it is hard to remove it all. Plaque that is left will form tartar and this is impossible to remove without the help of your dentist and hygienist. Plaque and tartar can cause cavities in teeth and also causes gum issues.
- They check for gum disease. Plaque that builds up on the teeth can start to damage the gums causing them to become inflamed and bleed. This is the start of gum disease and if it is allowed to progress, the gums will detach from the root surface and eventually cause bone loss, loosening the teeth.
- They check for tooth decay. Bacteria in the mouth can produce acid that attacks the teeth, leading to cavities. If seen early, these can be fixed easily with small tooth coloured fillings. If left, they can make the tooth sensitive and then eventual painful.
- Oral cancer detection. As part of your dental check-up, your dentist will check for signs of oral cancer which is a very serious disease and can show no obvious signs at first.
As well as the above, there are many other abnormalities that can occur in the mouth and the dentist is highly trained to recognise these. New technologies mean that they can also straighten crooked teeth in short amounts of time which makes look better and makes them easier to clean. They also offer advice and help correct any bad habits that may potentially cause future problems.
