Why is it so important to wear retainers after orthodontic treatment?
When you have orthodontic treatment, you will always be advised to wear a retainer at the end, otherwise the teeth tend to start moving back again. When you have been through months of orthodontic treatment, the last thing you will want is for your teeth to move back into their original positions!
Retainers are much easier to wear than orthodontic appliances and are a simple way to maintain the results you have achieved. There are different types of retainer but you will usually have the option of something clear and removable, or something fixed.
Your dentist will advise you on the best retention to suit you following your treatment, sometimes suitability will depend on how out of position your teeth were to start with. You will usually be advised to wear the retainer day and night for the first three months and then following a review by the dentist, you can go onto nights only.
