What causes jaw pain?
2018 January 8
Jaw pain is a relatively common occurrence, and although it shouldn’t happen there are many reasons why it can. While some people suffer a sudden sharp pain, others notice a dull ache that can increase over time. Finding out the cause is the first step to starting the correct treatment, so it is important to see a dentist as soon as possible. The most likely causes of jaw pain are;
- Teeth grinding. Teeth grinding is the process of grinding or clenching your teeth that is not associated with chewing food. It is commonly done without the person realising, often during sleep, and is the most common cause of jaw pain. If left without treatment, it can cause severe damage to the teeth and jaw.
- Temporomandibular (TMJ) disorder. This is a disorder affecting the joint of the jaw. Not only can it cause pain and restricted opening, but it can also cause the jaw to make a clicking or popping noise when opening and closing. In severe cases the jaw can become stuck in an open or closed position.
- Dental conditions. These include decay, abscesses and gum disease and while they are separate from the jaw, the pain can radiate across causing jaw soreness. Another cause of aches is when you are missing teeth, as the remaining teeth are taking more pressure from biting and chewing.
