NASA and Dentistry

by Sanjay Narda

You may not think it, but NASA has had a lot of influence over new developments in the dental industry over the years. These developments are known as spin-offs. Other well know spin-offs ore memory foam and scratch resistant lenses.

The dentally related spinoffs that NASA have been involved with are:

  • Invisible braces, such as Invisalign, are made from a type of transparent ceramic called polycrystalline alumina. This material is very strong, so can be made quite thin and because of its clear appearance is perfect for invisible braces. It was originally developed for protection of infrared antennae on heat-seeking missile trackers!
  • NASA technology has been used to help prevent water contamination in dental procedures. The technology was originally developed for air and water purification in human space flight.
  • NASA is working with the U.S Navy to develop a new way to detect the onset of periodontal disease. This disease is the biggest cause of tooth loss in people over the age of 35. The technology uses ultrasonic waves to examine the tissues and was originally developed to detect cracks in air crafts without having to take them apart.
  • NASA is currently in the process of finding better ways of taking, developing and reading dental X-Rays. This will lead to better quality images, using less radiation.
