Can the foods and drinks I consume cause tooth erosion?

Firstly, what is erosion? Erosion of the teeth is the gradual dissolving of tooth enamel.

Prolonged exposure to foods and drinks which are ‘acidic’ or high in sugar will eventually lead to tooth erosion. Some of the more common acidic things that lead to tooth erosion are sweets, fizzy drinks, wine and fruit juices. Listed below are some pH values of certain foods and drinks, the lower the number, the more acidic the item is. Anything with a pH level lower than 5.5 can cause tooth erosion if consumed regularly.

  • Most tap water: 7.0
  • Milk: 6.9
  • Cheese: 5.9
  • Rice cakes: 5.0
  • Bananas: 4.6
  • Beer: 4.4
  • Orange juice: 3.8
  • Apples: 3.4
  • Cola: 2.5
  • Red wine: 2.5

It is fine to consume foods with an acidic pH level, but it is important to restrict the frequency of consumption. Tooth erosion can cause weakening of the teeth and exposure of the dentine which is darker in colour. Drinking water regularly will help to counteract some of the acidity, and seeing the dentist regularly is important to spot any early signs.
