Bank House’s History

The Bank House Dental Centre building has an interesting history and has seen many changes in its time. In researching the history of Princes Risborough and the building we were able to go back as far as it being a school for boys in 1830 where we found the following advertisement from the Bucks Gazette and general Advertiser dated Saturday 9th January 1830:
“John Young Stratton informs his friends, and the public in general, that his PREPARATORY SCHOOL for YOUNG GENTLEMEN under Twelve Years of Age, will re-open after the present recess, on MONDAY, 18th JANUARY. Terms – Board and Education in Latin, English, Writing and Accounts, £20 per Annum, washing not included.  Payments to be made half – yearly; and a quarters notice or pay previous to removal.”

There were also many letters discovered from literature found by Buckinghamshire Archaeological society which were written between a 9 year old pupil of the school and his mother and father which continue until he leaves the school at 12 years of age. The letters speak of many happenings in the school; including the illness and deaths of many students from meningitis and tuberculosis, to the two annual fairs on 6th May for cattle and 21st October for pleasure.

The building remained a school for up to 30 years, but by sometime before 1861 it was definitely closed and inhabited by a Mr J Busby who was a painter and tobacconist. In 1868 Mr Busby was awoken at midnight to an alarm of fire which tore through the building damaging his workshop, out houses and the two adjacent buildings. Two fire engines had been sent for but by the time they arrived at 3 o clock in the morning the fire had been extinguished by people from the village. Even the women assisted, climbing ladders and hauling buckets as well as they could. Some said that Mr Busby himself started the fire, although this was never confirmed. The building was then re-built, this time to the height of the adjacent buildings making it bigger than before.

It is hard to find any information on the building for the following 30 years but we believe it has been a dental practice for the last 100 years!

We have of course evolved greatly in that time and we are now a modern, friendly and caring practice. Dr Sanjay Narda has just recently celebrated his 10 years at Bank House and offers implant dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and adult orthodontics (including the Inman Aligner, 6 Month Smiles and invisible braces) as well as general dentistry.
